What does our next mystery company have in common with a disease? Don’t worry I’m not talking about COVID, monkeypox or some other new virus sweeping the globe, but something that is almost as old as humankind – GOLD FEVER!

So first let’s talk about GOLD…

The 16th century was the age of the conquistadores, who traveled from Europe to the Northern Andes region of South America in search of El Dorado, which ranged in legend from a king so rich he covered himself in gold each morning and bathed in a sacred lake each evening, to a lost city of gold waiting to be discovered.

It turns out El Dorado wasn’t a city or a particular king, but an initiation ritual for new rulers of the Muisca civilization in what is now Colombia where they would throw gold into a lake as an offering to the gods, but while covered in gold dust of course. 

Rappers today may think they make it rain, but they’ve got nothing on the ancient world.

Ancient history is fun and all, but what about today?  How does the legend of El Dorado translate to the modern world?  

Well, people are still searching for gold, and in fact the gold mining market is expected to reach almost $250 billion by 2026, with uses in everything from jewelry to industrial components to central bank reserves.

And the modern Colombian gold market is fragmented, with lots of small producers working claims and trying to get their ore to market.  But who do they sell it to?
