Today we are kicking off our Investor Spotlight series. I will give you an example each week depicting the journeys of different private investors as they’ve navigated their way through the private investor space.
My first bio today is someone you may – or may not – have heard of…Mr. Spencer Rascoff. Mr. Rascoff co-founded Zillow in 2006 and was its CEO for about a decade. Not only was he an early investor in Zillow, but he has been an active angel investor in a whole host of companies, along with an impressive list of many other accomplishments.
Have all of the companies Mr. Rascoff invested in been mind-blowing successes like Zillow?
|
NO! I can’t think of a single investor who has hit 100% winners, so Mr. Rascoff is no exception.
As evidenced by his LinkedIn blog, Mr. Rascoff is very transparent about his wins and losses. Like many, his very first investment was a total failure– at least financially speaking.
This first investment was in a company called Ex2Get in 1998. Mr. Rascoff describes this company as essentially a restaurant delivery service (like Uber Eats) but before the days of the smartphone. Although it had a Web presence, most of its business came through a customer’s landline via a call center.
|
Today we would think being a first mover in a service like this would have been a good idea with massive potential (especially during Covid lockdowns!). But what he learned through this “failed investment” was that successful companies not only require a good idea, great execution but also GOOD TIMING…So did his second investment go better? Not at all!
However, over the years, Mr. Rascoff has learned a tremendous amount from these struggles.
Through continual learning, he has gotten better at identifying investment opportunities that have real potential. His blog details what he looks for when he invests – I encourage you to check that out! And since 1999, Mr. Rascoff has invested in over 100 startups and tech companies – mostly with “good success.”

With that, I would like to direct you to hear the story of another Founder and CEO, and real estate investor – Mr. Oleksiy Lubinsky.
|
Mr. Oleksiy Lubinsky is the Founder and CEO of Rentberry– a company we have been closely watching over the past couple of years ever since it was brought to the Boardroom’s attention.
Rentberry is the first real estate platform that offers a fully digital rental journey.
Rentberry operates WORLDWIDE and is present in approximately 50 countries. It is seeing huge opportunities especially in the “flexible living” space – where people can rent a fully furnished property for about 3-12 months.
Has this journey been easy and struggle-free? Of course not! I encourage you to hear how Mr. Lubinshky has managed to navigate and pivot his company through not only one crisis (the Pandemic) but TWO – the war in Ukraine. As Mr. Lubinsky is a natve of Ukraine and most of his engineering team lives in Ukraine, I invite you to learn more about these challenges here.
|
Without missing a beat, Rentberry has not merely managed its way through these crises, but has even grown exponentially! The company currently boasts about 8 MILLION properties listed daily on its website as well as about 1.5 MILLION monthly users!
Here how Mr. Lubinsky has managed these extraordinary maneuvers as well as, in my opinion, the company’s potential for continued explosive growth by checking out this INCREDIBLE interview here.
